Nortel Networks Corporation, commonly known as Nortel, was a Canadian multinational telecommunications and data networking equipment manufacturer that operated from 1895 until its bankruptcy in 2009.

Nortel's origins trace back to 1895 with the establishment of the Northern Electric and Manufacturing Company, which initially produced fire alarm boxes and other electrical equipment. Over the decades, the company evolved, becoming a leader in telecommunications technology. In the 1970s, it was renamed Northern Telecom and later rebranded as Nortel Networks in the 1990s. Nortel was instrumental in developing digital switching systems and fiber-optic technology, significantly contributing to the telecommunications infrastructure globally. However, financial mismanagement, intense market competition, and legal troubles led Nortel to file for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in 2009. The catastrophic downfall resulted in the liquidation of assets, including Nortel’s valuable patent portfolio, and the restructuring of its operations under immense debt
